![]() BOXEE BOX FORUMS SOFTWAREHowever, there’s something I’d like to add to that:> My greatest frustration with all of the media streamers I’ve seen so far is that they fall short in the usability department.> Expanding on that: I’ve yet to see one of these devices that wasn’t built (on the software side) using off-the-shelf Linux-based components. *> Mike, you hit the nail firmly on the head with the comment that these devices are still in their infancy.I remember how awesome it was to have a remote with my VCR … it was wired with like a 10’ cable for the remote! Several years later when my 2-Head VCR died I bought a FOUR HEAD (Yeah! Awesome!) VCR with digital display and wireless remote! I was ecstatic, ha ha! I had to put it on my Montgomery Ward Credit Card because I didn’t want to write a check for $400… If we are going to date ourselves, I remember buying a VCR and the first VHS Tapes of movies were over $100. BOXEE BOX FORUMS UPDATEPopbox looked awesome on paper (and web site) but when I got it and the 1st firmware update blew it up, it went right back to Amazon. Looking back it was a very stupid design, but it did work. My first VCR weighted 50 pounds (no kidding – made of solid steel) and it’s ability to record programs by time was by a huge clock timer that sat on top of it (the clock itself was about as big as a DVD player is nowadays). But more than anything else what amazes me is how many stupid design decisions are still made, apparently by engineers who don’t really use this stuff themselves (how else to explain things that no normal person would ever do/want?) I still think that ALL of these devices are in their infancy – kind of like an early VCR, we are liable to look back on these days a few years from now and laugh at how folks were able to deal with so many things that don’t work the way they should. I really liked many of the basic concepts of the PopBox but the execution was definitely flawed. It’s clear in hindsight that Syabase rushed the unit out, and sometimes it’s impossible to recover from the kind of bad feelings that generates in customers. Assume all dates related to firmware releases posted by this account (popboxteam) are the official word from us here at Syabas. You will however receive an update this month. If we find a valid reason, it will be held back until next week. Assuming there isn’t any major flaws, you should see a release later this week. Your update for the firmware: It’s entering the QA process tomorrow. If this persists, we’ll have to break out the banhammer. There’s no reason for the extreme hostility or language towards one another on the forums. While we like to see people support us (philsoft) and we also like constructive feedback ( ), I would like to remind everyone here to keep it civil. No- still waiting for a firmware update to provide the basics and the beta testers are getting restless. This should have the horsepower (CE4100) and UI I’m looking for. ![]()
